HMP Bullingdon learner secures work placement with Timpson

While in custody at HMP Bullingdon, Academy learner, Lawrence White, completed and passed the Timpson Academy course successfully. Timpson then offered him a two week work placement upon release.

As a young parent, with limited family support, Lawrence had a history of repeat offending. He longed to settle down and start a family life. Securing a job with a regular wage would enable him to support his son, and keep out of prison.

Initially finding accommodation in a hostel, he made a successful application to Portsmouth City Council, which found him a place to stay in the foyer. Once housing was secured, he took the initiative to ask his Offender Manager to make contact with Milton Keynes College regarding the offer of the two week work placement.

This was soon organised, and Lawrence began his work placement at a Timpson’s in Portsmouth. Speaking about his future goals, Lawrence said: “My goal is to try to secure a place on the Timpson’s 16 week paid course. Employment Academy Coordinator, Lesley Reilly, came to visit me on the placement, and I demonstrated to her that my time keeping, attendance and punctuality were up to speed.

“The four week course in prison has really prepared me for the two week placement. What I was not used to was getting up and being at work all day – it is really hard work.”

Lawrence’s strong work ethic was confirmed by the Timpson Manager; who Lawrence commented was particularly ‘helpful and supportive’.  Timpson not only provided him a work placement, but generously reimbursed Lawrence’s travel and lunch costs to assist him further.
