The learners took to the challenge enthusiastically, relishing the chance to work on a real-life project for the College. Prior to the visit, the class had spent four days researching, brainstorming and preparing some ideas for a presentation.
Jean Gowin, Managing Director, Jeanius Consulting, the College’s public relations and marketing partner, commented: “I was very impressed by the way the group went about the task. They used the same processes that professional designers use, in terms of reviewing the brief, brainstorming, sketching out ideas, and selecting the best ideas to develop further. They even mocked-up how the logos would look on various applications including newsletters and websites.”
Montserrat Perez, Head of Cluster, OLASS South Central, added: “It was great for the learners to have real feedback. They did a fantastic job in the short space of time that they were given, took the feedback well and were keen to continue developing the logo based on our comments.”
Sally Alexander, Executive Director, OLASS said: “What struck me was how well the group worked as a team. The presenter was enthusiastic and engaging, but as the presentation went on it transpired that every single one of the team had contributed to the project. Some of the learners had taken on designer roles, where others had taken on leader or presenting roles. It was fantastic to see the learners developing those all-important team working skills.”
Learners who complete the graphic design course at HMP Coldingley have the opportunity to gain employment at the Coldingley design and print shop on site, a fantastic opportunity to develop their skills and experience on-the-job in print and design, which will give them a real chance of gaining employment in a similar role on release.
