As Health & Safety / Food Safety Tutor delivering education in prisons, you can really make a difference to improve people’s lives. Challenging, yet extremely rewarding, this role will play a significant part in helping to reduce our learners re-offending and support them into employment both whilst in prison and within the community upon release.

Our Justice Division delivers the Offender Learning and Skills Contract(OLASS) in 10 prisons across the East of England. Our vision is to deliver high quality education training and vocational skills to a wide range of offenders, from those serving very short sentences of under six months to life sentenced offenders. 

Our strong Tutors play an integral part in identifying the training requirements of our learners, building them a training plan and helping them to overcome any barriers to employment.

The salary band for a fully qualified Tutor is £24,088 - £29,213 and for an unqualified Tutor £19,373 - £23,678. PeoplePlus will support and fund unqualified or part qualified Tutors in obtaining a full teaching qualification.

What You Will Be Doing

  • To deliver an innovative Health & safety / Food Safety curriculum at Entry Level to Level 2 and demonstrate curriculum development opportunities and delivery strategies to meet the needs offender learners.
  • Preparing, delivering and reviewing individualised lesson plans for all sessions that address the training needs and skills required to reduce the offending behaviour of offenders. 
  • Continually reviewing your learner’s progression to ensure that the training continues to meet their identified needs.

  • Actively gaining feedback from learners and other sources, reviewing & improving curriculum content accordingly. 
  • Engaging and motivating both individuals and learner groups to increase retention. 
  • Completing all of the necessary administration e.g. registers, enrolment forms, LDP’s, reviews, etc.
  • Provide Information, Advice & Guidance (IAG) and sign post learners to other learning opportunities / support where appropriate, whilst maintaining learner welfare.
  • Roles may vary in some detail and flexibility is a prime requirement of staff

What You Will Need To Have


  • Full teaching qualification at Level 5 or above or equivalent (e.g. PGCE, Cert Ed, DTTLS, DET)
  • NEBOSH / IOSH or other appropriate Health & Safety qualification Level 3 or above
  • Food Safety Qualification at Level 3 or above
  • Competency in English & Maths (GCSE Grade C or above / Functional Skills L2)
  • Experience of working with learners that have specific and challenging needs 
  • Good level of IT competence
  • Confidence in using a diverse range of presentation, facilitation and communication skills
  • Experience of developing curriculum/ programmes of learning
  • Experience of planning & delivering a roll-on, roll-off programme
  • The ability to handle challenging situations whilst remaining calm and in control especially in a group situations
  • Respect for and understanding of Safeguarding, Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety and Data Protection policies
  • Unqualified tutors – Working towards a teaching qualification (Sponsorship may be available)
  • Awareness of the additional learning support needs of learners
  • A passion to motivate and lead by example to support people to achieve qualifications
  • Be able to work as part of a team and on their own to maintain effective delivery
  • An empathy with the learner group and experience of overcoming complex barriers
  • A background in working with unemployed and / or disadvantaged people in a challenging or secure environment is desirable
  • Be an effective team player working across a wide range of independent organisations
    Specific attention to the health and safety requirements of learners with complex needs

However we do consider applications from candidates who do not already hold a full teaching qualification and we will support our new recruits toward qualification to the level required by national regulations. All new recruits who are unqualified or part qualified will be appointed on the unqualified salary band. Part time tutors have the same right to professional development as full time tutors. 
PeoplePlus’s financial support toward gaining the required level of qualification will be calculated on a pro-rata basis to the tutor’s part time hours. Tutors who fail to participate fully, cease any course prior to its completion or leave the business during the course or within 2 years from the date on which the last stage of training was completed, will repay all or part of the costs.
