As a Tutor delivering education in prisons, you can really make a difference to improve people’s lives. Challenging, yet extremely rewarding, this role plays a significant part in helping to reduce our learners re-offending.

Our Justice Division delivers the Offender Learning and Skills Contract(OLASS) in 10 prisons across the East of England. Our vision is to deliver high quality education training and vocational skills to a wide range of offenders, from those serving very short sentences of under six months to life sentenced offenders. 

Our strong Tutors play an integral part in identifying the training requirements of our learners, building them a training plan and helping them to overcome any barriers to employment.

The salary band for a fully qualified Tutor is £24,088 - £29,213 and for an unqualified Tutor £19,373 - £23,678. PeoplePlus will support and fund unqualified or part qualified Tutors in obtaining a full teaching qualification.
 
This position is for 21 hours per week, the advertised salary would be pro-rata in line with the actual hours worked. The working pattern is Monday to Thursday 0800 to 1700 (45 min lunch) and Friday 0800 to 1230
 

What You Will Be Doing

•Identifying the individual needs of learners ensuring that all learners have an individual learning plan which links to their long term employment goals. 
•Continually reviewing our learner’s progression to ensure that the training continues to meet their identified needs. 
•Preparing, delivering and reviewing comprehensive lesson plans for all sessions that address the training needs of the group including basic literacy, numeracy, language and other social / employability barriers to employment. 
•Actively gaining feedback from learners and other sources, reviewing & improving curriculum content accordingly. 
•Engaging and motivating both individuals and learner groups to increase retention. 
•Completing all of the necessary administration e.g.registers, enrolment forms, ILPs, reviews, ,
•Awarding Body documentation as determined by external and internal requirements in line with contractual deadlines. 
•Working with colleagues / hosts to assist learner’s progression towards qualifications, and movement into employment. 
•Roles may vary in some detail between sites and flexibility is a prime requirement of staff
 

What You Will Need To Have

Qualified Tutors

  • Full teaching qualification at Level 5 or above or equivalent (e.g PGCE, Cert Ed, DTTLS)

Qualified and Unqualified Tutors

  • Specialist subject qualification
  • Confidence in using a diverse range of presentation, facilitation and communication skills.
  •  Experience of developing curriculum/ programmes of learning and of planning & delivering, on a roll-on, roll-off programme.
  • The ability to handle challenging situations whilst remaining calm and in control especially in a group situation.
  • Respect for and understanding of Safeguarding, Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety and Data Protection policies with specific attention to health and safety requirements when organising off-site activities.
  • A passion to motivate and lead by example to support people to achieve qualifications.
  • An empathy with the learner group and experience of overcoming complex barriers, a background in working with unemployed and / or disadvantaged people and in a challenging or secure environment is desirable.

Successful applicants will be required to undertake a DBS check or Disclosure Scotland check and to provide proof of their right to work in the UK Wherever possible, we aim to recruit fully qualified tutors to deliver learning and skills in HMPS establishments. However we do consider applications from candidates who do not already hold a full teaching qualification and we will support our new recruits toward qualification to the level required by national regulations. All new recruits who are unqualified or part qualified will be appointed on the unqualified salary band. Part time tutors have the same right to professional development as full time tutors. 
 
PeoplePlus’s financial support toward gaining the required level of qualification will be calculated on a pro-rata basis to the tutor’s part time hours. Tutors who fail to participate fully, cease any course prior to its completion or leave the business during the course or within 2 years from the date on which the last stage of training was completed, will repay all or part of the costs.
