Role Overview

Our Distance Learning/Language Lab Supervisors here at PeoplePlus supervise Prisoners doing distance learning courses such as the Open University and also prisoners who are learning languages and other subjects via computer packages. This will involve assessing the learning and skills needs of individual offenders with a view to improving their employability skills along with contributing to the review of individual offender’s progress in meeting their learning and skills needs throughout their sentence.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Working with the Education Manager, Team Leaders and other PeoplePlus staff to familiarise yourself with the curriculum and individual schemes of work. 
  • Working with Team Leaders and other PeoplePlus staff to ensure offenders in learning and skills receive support that falls within the course’s specifications. 
  • Working with the teaching team to identify the learning and skills needs of offenders and ensure that identified action points are written into an individual learning plan. 
  • Reviewing offender progression with other PeoplePlus teaching and learning staff to ensure that their identified needs are met and progress is reported to Sentence Planning Boards. 
  • Actively gaining feedback from offenders about the learning and skills service offered. 
  • Dealing with difficult / demanding offenders in a safe and secure manner. 
  • Preparing and displaying learners’ work in classrooms and other appropriate environments. 
  • Have a sound knowledge and understanding of the contractual requirements e.g. prisoner attendance and discipline; ensure PeoplePlus’s equal opportunities and health and safety procedures are adhered to. 
  • Completing of all necessary administration e.g. reviews, timesheets, training plans determined by external and internal requirements in line with contractual deadlines 
  • Carrying out any additional duties as reasonably requested by line management. 

What You Will Need To Have


  • Qualified in English and maths to a minimum of Level 2
  • Numerate and literate. 
  • Clearly communicates in a manner appropriate to groups and individuals. 
  • Engages and motivates prisoners. 
  • Empathic to the needs of the prisoners, whilst remaining focused on targets. 
  • Innovative, prepared to think outside the box in search of new ideas. 
  • Deals with challenging situations whilst remaining calm and in control. 
  • Committed to continuous improvement – personal and organisational. 
  • Experience of supporting learning to mixed ability groups. 
  • Experience of completing administration relevant to role. 
  • Flexibility is a prime requirement of staff.
